Shaheen Women?s Welfare and Resource Organisation: Encouraging Women to Rise Higher

Shaheen Women?s and : Women to Rise Higher

“I was only 16 years old, but my family did not have the money and we badly needed some. I did not know anything about marriage nor did I know who I was getting married to all I wanted to do was make some money. I thought all people in the Gulf were prosperous. I had no idea what I was getting into and suffered terribly for it.”

These are the words of Nazia who got married to a 75 year old Sheik from a middle-eastern country. Her story is like that of many girls in the old city who are poor and get deceived by marriage brokers in search of a better life but alas that dream is shattered by the harsh realities of being a part of human trafficking for most of these bright women of Hyderabad.

“I was sent a talaq-nama by post after I spent two weeks with the Sheik and he left me promising to send for me there. I was shattered! When I returned to my house my parents wanted me to work as a domestic help in houses but I refused to do that as I wanted to do tailoring or a beautician, coming to Shaheen is a great experience for me I feel happy doing the vocational courses offered here. I believe I am on my way to doing what I want to do instead of being forced into things.”

There is a ray of hope in the form of the white falcon which encourages women to speak up and demand their rights. In the congested by-lanes of the Old-City around Charminar in Hyderabad, lies Shaheen a Women’s resource and welfare organisation. This is one the few NGO’s in the country that works for Women’s welfare and empowerment. The organisation works on the principle that change happens when cultural norms are challenged.

“Indeed change is what we require with regards to the status of Women in India.”, echoes Jameela Nishat Founder and Secretary of Shaheen Women’s Welfare and Resource Centre. “Women in the city are not free to express their opinion or feelings and the recent attack on Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen in Hyderabad is proof of that. Women are targeted everywhere may it be religious extremism, human trafficking, pornography or even globalisation.”

]]>

Shaheen began as an effort to fight for women’s rights back in 1987 during a conference of men in the old city which was titled, “Woh mard ki kya joh apni biwi ko nahi marta?”(He who does not beat his wife physically is not a man). This inspired Jameela Nishat founder member and a resident of the old city to speak up for the women there and around the country. “Domestic violence is not confined to the poor and women from affluent families are also treated very badly, the concept of controlling and disciplining a wife is absurd. Something had to be done, and Shaheen was born.”

Shaheen (the falcon which flies at the highest altitude) signifies the encouragement women need, to aim higher. This organization runs vocational training courses like sewing, henna application, tailoring and also offers educational courses/tuitions for girls/women who have discontinued their education. “I had discontinued my education at 14 because I was not allowed to step outside my house. I joined Shaheen for learning henna and I got a lot of support from the workers there to continue my education. Now I have completed my B.Com through distance education.” adds Arshiya another one of Shaheen’s products.

Shaheen has a set of very dedicated workers who visit houses and try and know the status of women there and there are several problems associated with that as people do not allow the workers in as they fell that their conversation with the women of the house will corrupt the moral fabric of the household. “Most women are not aware of their potential and rights, our workers help them realize that. In fact many of our field workers were just students for vocational workers or have been helped by us as they were victims of domestic abuse. These women have been through that and want to help others who are in their position now.” says Jameela who is fondly referred to as Jameelaji, Jameela Aunty and Jameela Didi. For many girls in the old city this is the only place which teaches them to fight back against domestic violence. They have an active domestic violence counseling centre and a lawyer for consultation

As this is a place which encourages women to speak up against men who are usually their husbands and their families it does not go down well with most people and as a result there are constant threats to these women. In response to this Jameelaji says, “I keep getting threats which are verbal and even sometimes physical but I am born in this part of town and know how to deal with people here. Our organization has to bear the brunt of many disgruntled men and upset religious organizations, but we have to take these things into our stride. We often have groups coming of men coming to threaten us.”

This centre serves as a ray of hope for many women around the old city and its surrounding areas. The organisation also has an active rural centre to serve the women who live in villages or the outskirts of the city. The larger objective is that Women need to be a part of the socio-economic development of the country to progress and need to have equal rights as our constitution guarantees that to every citizen of India. Why should women be left behind or considered after the men? Organisations like this form the basis of a new social movement for recognising the importance of women’s rights and the girl child. To lend a helping hand and further this cause contact.

The Higher You Go

The You Go

The higher you go

“The higher you go, the cooler it becomes.” Really? Let us start from the fundamentals. It is a maxim we learnt form geography in school about the weather.

Having come a long way in our professions and our careers, can we safely say it has been cooler over the years, as we ascended the corporate ladder? Even at that, how can we simply apply the higher you go belief in the way we and live?

Has it certainly been cooler for you over the years as you climbed higher? Certainly not, you answer. The higher you go; the cooler, may work in geography or atmospheric conditions, certainly not in the workplace, vocations, professions, family and relationships.

What with mounting responsibilities, challenges, economic and social problems. It has certainly not been cooler for me. If it has been so for you, then you must be a superstar. Even superstars feel the pinch too as they rise in stardom. While there may be some consistency in geographical conditions, it is not necessarily so in economic and social conditions.

In geography, it may just be true that the higher you go the cooler. In professional practice and business, you may be up today, and down tomorrow. Either way, it gets hotter. This is the real story.

So to remain cool, should you stagnate? No! You have to be upwardly mobile to improve your fortunes and quality of life for you and your family. But you need to consistently do a number of things to make it cooler as you go higher. You need to do so because the challenges of leadership and the hassles of remaining competitive in the marketplace are becoming overwhelming globally.

Everything has an atmosphere. For your person it is called aura, and by extension charisma. This personal atmosphere can pull or repel with interplay of forces with other persons or objects. Metallic objects that do so are called magnets. The higher you go.

As you have atmospheric conditions; hot, cold, harsh winter or summer, so they are for you as a person.

Growing up and progressing in life, business, your workplace and profession have atmospheres. And so the challenge for you is to emulate nature and make sure your atmosphere becomes cooler as you go higher in life and your profession.

You need to chill your atmosphere of going higher so that you can live long, be more productive and tell a good story about your life and work. For professional businessmen and , the world over, life and work is certainly getting hotter. And some are dying in their 30s and 40s largely as a result of high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, kidney failure and accidents.

]]>

Check out the obituary pages of many newspapers, you will see a familiar caption as is done in Nigeria: Gone too soon; then a tribute, followed by names of the Committee of Friends. And the pay off…burial arrangements as announced by the family. The higher you go.

If you don’t want to be a victim, then chill your atmosphere. The critical question now is: How cool or hot is your state of life and business now? Cool! Congratulations, please keep it up so that you may live long and it shall be well with you. May be it is hot. Then you must act fast and begin to chill your atmosphere as nature does in our study of geography. So how do you chill your condition? Adapt what I call the compressor strategy. If possible, be a compressor. Doing so enables you to use less space, time and energy, achieve more and tell the good story of success.

To understand this better, take a look at all the electrical gadgets in your home that chill; refrigerators, air conditioners and others. They all have something in common- a component called the compressor. What does it do? Powered by electricity, this component compresses a special gas causing condensation that transforms air to liquid droplets. When this happens, the temperature of the fridge drops and the atmosphere in it becomes a lot cooler. That is essentially what an air conditioner does. Read the concluding of this story in 2, in the next edition of Great Storytelling network.

So why don’t you begin to compress your thoughts, actions, ways and methods. The way you work and live; why don’t you compress and simplify them, chill your atmosphere and make life and work easier for you.

See how technology works. Any improvement in that field shortens time, space and volume; improves speed and efficiency, and increases productivity. The coming of the computer has achieved this. Tons of dates bases that were once stored in huge volumes of files, shelves and cabinet are now conveniently stored in flash drives and CD ROMs. What started as mainframe computer has been reduced to laptops. This is compression and simplicity.

So how simple is your lifestyle, your work and the way you live. How simple are your products and services for consumers to use, and your work processes, even production lines? Are they cumbersome or has everything been compressed, reduced in time and length and simplified.

How simple are your brands for your consumers to understand and use? What is your brand story? Do your brands tell their story to make your customers understand your products and services? Can brand tell stories? Yes they can. If you don’t know how to do it, then employ the services of professional storytellers. A subset of this group is known as brand storytellers.

What about the communication lines and chains of command and authority in your , are they compressed, flat or circuitous, of many layers?

If you are a CEO, General Manager or Senior Manager, have you compressed your work processes and communication flow with subordinate staff? Do you tell corporate stories to communicate well? Or are you one of those bosses that believe so much in line management: “You must relate to me through your boss.” That is your story.

Every Monday morning, you hold endless management meetings to stem the dwindling fortunes of your organisation in the marketplace. The business temperature is rising, heating up the business atmosphere for you and your company.

The higher you go, the cooler it becomes. That is if you are a leader and not a boss. There is a difference. Leaders command respect and have disciples whom they groom, care for, and secure a future. When they do so, the corporate atmosphere is cool. Not so for bosses. They heat up the system with their rigidity. They forcefully demand loyalty and are grudgingly followed by unrepentant and complaining workers.

Nothing heats up a system like complaining followers. They poison the atmosphere. Even Almighty God does not tolerate complaining followers. That is why He chose Moses in the book of Genesis, a man with a large heart to lead the children of Israel through the desert to their promised land.

So dear professional, how large is your heart? What are the stories in your heart? Do you tell them to lead? How humble are you? Do you serve to lead (servant leader) or do you drive to lead (slave driver). The higher you go.

As a professional, leader, mentor, CEO, manager, supervisor, please do not heat up the system. You have a responsibility to make it cooler, not just for you, but for others following you. Be a compressor, humble yourself, develop a large heart, serve, tell motivating stories, and simplify the work process.

Do these and more, and you will harmonise your ways with geography which teaches that, the higher you, the cooler it becomes. Goodluck.

Calculating Your Expenses For Studying In Australia

Calculating Your For In Australia

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>

Being able to study in Australia is definitely one opportunity that a lot of people would not want to pass. As the country’s educational system is considered to be one of the best in the world today, this one is definitely something worth the effort. Thus, a lot of students line up in the embassies daily in order to get their visas.

However, there still a lot of things that one needs to considered when grabbing this opportunity. One of the most important of these is, of course, the cost of studying in the country. And since this is Australia, one should be forewarned that this one is not going to be cheap, though it is actually much lower than other developed countries.

The biggest expenses that you will incur here is the tuition fees. This one is going to be dependent on several factors. The first one here would be the course you are getting. Here, keep in mind that courses are considerably less than full fledged college degrees, with the price increasing up every level. Also, take note that each specific course differs considerably in the amount of fees that they will be collecting.

On average, students who plan on taking up vocational course, would need to prepare from around AU$ 5,000 to AU$ 18,000 for a year of study. Note that this one covers up to the highest certificate issued by vocational schools to students. On the other hand, those planning to get a university degree can expect fees to start at AU$ 9,000 for a year of study.

Aside from the matriculation fees, you also need to consider additional expenditures. supplies will most likely be the next biggest item in your budget. This one is actually variable and will depend on the course and subjects that you will take. Technical courses, which require a lot of equipment, will be in terms of this when compared to, say, writing courses.

You will also need to check out the accommodations that you will get. As a useful tip, unless you plan to study in the country for several years, it would be better if you get yourself a slot in the campus dormitory, instead of living out. This will usually set around AU$ 200 per week, inclusive of meals and other expenses.

One last thing that you need to take note of is that even before you start your term, you need to present proof to the immigration department that you have sufficient funds for the entire duration of your study. By sufficient, this one usually equates to around AU$ 18,000 worth of assets. And in case, you find that you need additional funds, you are allowed to work time for that purpose only.

LPN Programs: Looking at the Historical Perspective of Vocational Nursing

LPN Programs: at the Perspective of Vocational Nursing

You might be wondering what ever happened to the Nursing Profession in relation to Vocational Nursing. The Truth is vocational or practical nursing has been making the function and responsibilities of Nurses all over the world lighter and easier. They are essential members of the health care team and without them nurses and even doctors will find it difficult to carefully and effectively care for patients.

The LPN Programs started within the years after 1890′s when doctors and hospital staff saw the importance of having extra pair of hands in caring for clients. During that time, practical nurses can be anyone who would like to render care to wounded soldiers and other sick people. They played a significant role in the improvement of nursing care until today. The of vocational nursing became formal and the standard was set. Instead of hiring just anybody who can perform simple nursing tasks, the Nursing council thought it would be more beneficial to offer individuals the opportunity to have an education regarding practical nursing. From then on, practical nurses were given equal opportunities like registered nurses do. They can choose to further their career to become registered nurses and receive a pay or simply stay being a practical nurse.

]]>

The formalization of practical nursing became a stepping stone to most individual who can’t afford to a nursing degree.
